Grad School

[Un]finished business

What do you think?

What do you think?

This is to salute my three friends and former classmates in grad school who will be marching (with three-stripes gowns this time) on Saturday, October 10. Warm wishes of meaningfully lucrative careers as PhDs go to Joahn, Maan and Marivic. Needless to say, I should be marching with you if only… :(

Anyway, I can only imagine myself donning the doctoral gown someday soon. Actually, I may not attend the ceremony if ever I finally graduate. I have already experienced attending the very solemn commencement ceremonies of that prestigious university along Taft. What is important is to get the degree.

I am very happy for my friends that they have weathered all the ’storms’ towards this pursuit of ours. I should better get my act together lest a PhD is rendered irrelevant for me someday because of age. CONGRATS Joahn, Maan and Marivic!

Grounded Theory and other mind-boggling pursuits

I am currently re-reading my copies of the Grounded Theory Review. In a few weeks I will have to defend a proposal which makes use of this research approach. Dr. Barney Glaser surely makes things sound easy in his articles but I could still not confidently discuss classic GT much less write convincingly about it.

My other interest is Stylistics. Before, I looked forward to teaching it in the grad school. I took the subject under a very good teacher who later on kicked me out of the university. But she is still a good teacher because I enjoyed her class then. But when it comes to literary criticism/analysis, I take my hat off (if I am wearing any, of course!) to my former thesis adviser and teacher, Dr. Isagani R. Cruz. I have asked him a while ago via YM about a book I can read on Stylistics and he said I should check out his collection in the library. Now, my current adviser once said that it is normal to have more than one research interest. Mine are HUMOR and STYLISTICS. I do not need to connect the two, do I?
